Vic: Fire in Harley-Davidson shop causes $4 million damage
A fire which devastated one of Melbourne's largest Harley-Davidson motorbike dealershipslast night is estimated to have caused more than $4 million damage.
And one of the city's major streets -- Elizabeth Street -- remains closed to north-boundtraffic this morning, while fire investigators sift through the ashes to determine thecause of the shock blaze.
The fire swept through the three-storey Peter Stevens Motorcycle Shop at about 8pm(AEDT) last night -- forcing the evacuation of 100 people from one of the city's largestgay saunas, Steamworks, along with patrons from nearby cafes.
Metropolitan Fire Brigade spokesman JOHN TAYLOR says it took 60 firefighters around90 minutes to control the flames, which were fuelled by exploding petrol tanks and storesof oils, solvents, motorcycle tyres and spare parts.
MFB duty inspector GREG PEARSON says most of the damage to the motorcycles, which weremainly on the ground floor, is a result of water and smoke, as opposed to fire.
Mr PEARSON says Elizabeth Street's likely to reopen by lunchtime.
